The Curriculum-an Overview

We aim to provide a structured and happy environment. The school’s curriculum is an evolving framework of educational and social skills with teaching programmes designed to meet the specific needs of each child. Each pupil has an Individual Education Plan with their own targets. These programmes are evaluated termly and new objectives set. Regular Parents’ Evenings are held to discuss progress.

Staff working at Downham School help all pupils learn through:

  • A total communication environment featuring signs, symbols and tactile cues, together with the spoken word;
  • Provision of appropriate information technology hardware, software and accessories;
  • Inclusion of therapies appropriate to need, e.g. speech and physiotherapy;
  • Implementation of strategies to reduce the effect of sensory impairments;
  • A consistent and sensitive application of programmes designed to moderate challenging behaviours;
  • A commitment to partnership with parents, fellow professionals, pupils and the community of which we are part.

    Some pupils will have needs that are central to their learning and quality of life. Taking care of these needs is an essential part of the curriculum. Support may include:

  • Promoting pupil independence through the use of specialist aids and equipment.
  • Developing pupils’ self esteem.

Support is provided by a range of therapists as necessary.
